Healthy Turmeric Popcorn

Popcorn is a universally loved snack, but store-bought popcorn can be unhealthy. This recipe shows how to make a healthy version of popcorn at home. The recipe uses fresh corn kernels, butter, oil, turmeric powder, and salt to taste. The turmeric powder adds a unique flavor and color to the popcorn. The popcorn is cooked in a flat-based, heavy-bottomed pan on medium heat. The pan is shaken a couple of times to stir the corn. The popcorn is ready when the frequency of popping becomes low. This recipe is a great way to enjoy a healthy and delicious snack at home.

Recipe

Ingredients:

  • Dried corn: ½ cup
  • Butter: 2 Tbsp
  • Oil: 2 Tbsp
  • Salt: 1 tsp
  • Haldi: ¼ tsp

Instructions:

  1. In a flat-based, heavy-bottom pan, add the butter and oil and a couple of test corn.
  2. Once the test corn starts to pop, add the haldi, salt, and all of the corn.
  3. Turn the flame to medium, put on a fitting lid, and let the corn pop.
  4. Shake the pot a couple of times to stir the corn. Do not open the lid.
  5. Once the frequency of popping becomes low, turn the heat off and remove the lid.
  6. Once it comes to room temperature, store in an airtight container.

Architecture Tip

In India, the warm and humid climate can lead to cockroaches in the house. One place where they easily enter is through water traps, or the drains where water pipes go. When installing traps, put cockroach-proof traps in place. These traps have a small bowl inside that is always half full of water. The water keeps the cockroaches from climbing up the pipes.
